Paraneetroplus is a genus of cichlids (Cichlidae) that occursin Central America. The distribution area is in southeast Mexico on the Caribbean side of the isthmus of Tehuantepec and extends from the Río Papaloapan to the Río Grijalva .

features

Paraneetroplus species are relatively elongated and become 20 to 25.5 cm long. The mouth is below and narrow, the front jaw teeth conical or spade-shaped and larger than the rear. In contrast to other herichthyinen genera , the teeth in the lower jaw of Paraneetroplus are directed more forward. On the sides of the body between the base of the pectoral fin and the rear end of the dorsal fin, there are five to six spots, which can also be more or less distinct longitudinal stripes (e.g. in P. nebuliferus ). In the middle of the caudal peduncle there is a highly oval dark spot, through the middle of which the lower sideline passes. The caudal stalk is longer than high, the caudal fin is spade-shaped or slightly indented.

Systematics

According to the revision of the genus by McMahan and colleagues, Paraneetroplus consists of three species:

The genus Paraneetroplus was introduced in 1905 by the American ichthyologist Regan with the first description of Paraneetroplus bulleri and remained monotypical for a long time . In 2010, however, the 13 species previously included in the genus Vieja were added. Paraneetroplus bulleri was phylogenetically within the genus Vieja in the composition at that time. Since Paraneetroplus and Vieja thus form a common clade and, according to the priority rule of biological nomenclature, the older name takes precedence over the younger (later published), Vieja became a synonym for Paraneetroplus in 2010 . Since the morphological differences between Paraneetroplus and Vieja are relatively large, Vieja was revalidated in a different composition in mid-2015 with only eight species. To paraneetroplus now include three types, two other previously Vieja associated species of the genus were newly introduced Maskaheros assigned. Paraneetroplus is the sister genus of Maskaheros , Vieja the sister genus of the clade formed by Maskaheros and Paraneetroplus .
