Beans cichlid ( Maya hero beani ) is a freshwater fish from the family of the tilapias that occurs in northern Mexico in rivers, in the Pacific open. The distribution area includes the states of Nayarit and Sinaloa . Together with the pearl cichlid ( Herichthys cyanoguttatus ), Beans cichlid is the most northern species of the New World cichlid . It was named after the American ichthyologist Tarleton Hoffman Bean .

features

Beans cichlid can reach a length of up to 30 cm. The body is high and flattened at the sides, the head tapering towards the end of the mouth. The fish are colored silvery green and are called “Mojarra verde” (green cichlid) in their homeland. The relatively large scales have dark edges so that they form a fine mesh pattern. Dark spots on the posterior gill covers resemble this scale pattern. On the sides of the body, the animals show seven vertical dark bands, which, depending on their mood, can dissolve into individual spots. The eyes are red. Males get bigger and have bigger fins. Females are more gray and the metallic sheen is limited in most cases to the dorsal fin. The transverse bars are more pronounced.

During the breeding season, both sexes are striped black and white, the seven transverse bands are clearly pronounced, a large dark spot is found on the pectoral fin, an elongated one on the base of the tail. The iris is then black.

Way of life

Beans cichlid lives in the lower reaches of rivers that flow into the Pacific. The adult cichlids feed piscivor (on fish). They are substrate spawners . The brood care is initially carried out mainly by the female. After seven to nine days, when the fry have hatched, the male also becomes more involved.

Systematics

Beans cichlid was described as heros beani in 1889 by the American ichthyologist David Starr Jordan . Later the species was assigned to the genera Nandopsis and Parapetenia (synonym of Nandopsis ) and most recently to Cichlasoma . In April 2016, a team of Czech ichthyologists introduced the genus Mayaheros for Beans cichlid and its relatives .
