Nandopsis (=similar to[the genus] Nandus ) is a genus of medium-sized cichlids found on the Caribbean islands of Hispaniola and Cuba . The genus is closely related to Central American cichlids and was isolated from their relativeswhen the Greater Antilles split off from Central Americain the Eocene .
features
Nandopsis species are 20 to 24 cm long and have a typical, compact cichlid shape with a large head, a large, protruding mouth and large fangs. Males grow larger than females and get a steeper forehead profile or even a protruding frontal hump with age. The genus is considered difficult to diagnose and only a few differences to Central American cichlids can be specified. As synapomorphies a strong central projection on the lower jaw are symphysis tongue-side additional tips on the rear jaw teeth, a well-developed articular surface on, Palatinum and short flattened teeth on the fourth gear plate the upper Pharyngobranchiale (a bone of the gill skeleton).
Way of life
Nandopsis species live in inland waters, but sometimes also in brackish water or in lagoons with sea water. They practice brood care, are substrate spawners and usually lay their extensive clutch on a flat, horizontally lying stone. The male takes over the territorial defense, while the female looks after the spawn. The hatched fish larvae that are not yet buoyant are placed in sand pits. If the fry are able to swim, they are protected by both parents.
species
Currently the genus Nandopsis consists of three species.
- Nandopsis haitiensis (Tee-Van, 1935), Haiti
- Nandopsis ramsdeni (Fowler, 1938), eastern Cuba
- Nandopsis tetracanthus (Valenciennes in Cuvier & Valenciennes, 1831) (type species), Cuba
Nandopsis woodringi, a fourth species known only as a fossil, has been synonymous with Nandopsis haitiensis . Nandopsis sheljuzhkoi is a synonym of Afronandus sheljuzhkoi , a species of fish from the multi-spined family , which is only distantly related to the genus Nandopsis .
