Mayaheros ( Maya + Heros ) is a genus of Central American cichlids . The genus has a disjoint distribution area in northern Central America. Most species of the genus occur in rivers that flow into the Caribbean, in southeastern Mexico (states of Veracruz , Oaxaca , Chiapas , Tabasco , Campeche , Yucatán , Quintana Roo ), in Belize , in eastern Guatemala and in the adjacent border Honduras . Beans cichlid ( Mayaheros beani ) lives furthest north, in rivers that flow into the Pacific, in the northern Mexican states of Nayarit and Sinaloa . The genus was only introduced in April 2016 by a team of Czech ichthyologists . Before that, the species of the genus belonged to Cichlasoma .
features
Mayaheros species have a highly generalized morphology , but clearly form a monophyletic group within the heroine cichlids. The best diagnostic feature of the genus is the drawing, which consists of evenly distributed dark bars, without widening in the middle of the stripes and without a dominant spot on the middle of the sides of the body. During the breeding season they show a zebra-like pattern with black stripes on a light basic color.
species
There are currently six species in the genus:
- Mayaheros aguadae (Hubbs, 1936)
- Mayaheros amarus (Hubbs, 1936)
- Beans cichlid ( Mayaheros beani (Jordan, 1889))
- Mayaheros ericymba (Hubbs, 1936)
- Mayaheros trispilus (Hubbs, 1935)
- Tail cichlid ( Mayaheros urophthalmus (Günther, 1862))
