Isthmus of Tehuantepec

The isthmus of Tehuantepec is an isthmus in Mexico . With a width of 216 km, it represents the shortest land connection between the Gulf of Mexico and the Pacific and delimits Central America from the rest of North America . At the lowest point, the Chivela Pass , the pass height when crossing the Cordilleras is only 224 m.

Between 1888 and 1893, a railway line was built between the two coasts under the direction of Baron Carl von Wagner . It has a length of 308 km. Between 1899 and 1907 new port facilities were built in Coatzacoalcos and Salina Cruz . There have long been plans to build a lockless shipping canal at sea level. This plan was abandoned, instead the rail link between the two ports is being rehabilitated for international freight transport with the Corredor Interoceánico .
