Salina Cruz is the industrial center and the most important port city on the Pacific side of the isthmus of Tehuantepec in the Mexican state of Oaxaca with around 76,000 inhabitants. Salina Cruz is the administrative seat of the municipality of the same name Salina Cruz .
With the construction of the coastal railway line between 1888 and 1893 , the city experienced a large increase in population, but the construction of the Panama Canal did not result in the hoped-for development into an important trading center.
Salina Cruz has a large port with a dry dock and an attached container port. The main industrial operation in the city is PEMEX , which completed its refinery in 1979 .
