Isthmus of Tehuantepec

The Corredor Interoceánico (officially: Corredor Interoceánico del Istmo de Tehuantepec ) is a planned rail connection in Mexico , over which international freight will be transported from the Atlantic to the Pacific Ocean . It arises between the ports of Coatzacoalcos and Salina Cruz with a length of 308 km, west of the Río Corte on the isthmus of Tehuantepec .

history

In December 2018, the government announced its development plan for the Isthmus of Tehuantepec, which provides for the rehabilitation of the railway line built between 1896 and 1907. In February 2019, the Spanish government expressed its interest in investing in the transport project. On June 14, 2019, the public corporation “Corredor Interoceánico del Istmo de Tehuantepec” was founded by decree. The project is part of the national development plan 2019-2024.

On June 7, 2020, the Mexican government declared its willingness to provide over 20 billion pesos for the expansion of the rail line and the two ports by 2022. A few days later, the governor of Oaxaca , Alejandro Murat, announced that the rail link would be Template: future / in 3 yearscompleted in 2023 and begin operations. The investment project is led by the Singapore consultancy Surbana Jurong .
