Canal seco interoceánico

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Canal seco Interoceanico (German: Interozeanischer drying tunnel ) is a transport project in Costa Rica , in which by a railway and motorway link the international freight from the Atlantic Ocean - the Pacific coast to be transported for container ships. It is intended for cargo ships that are too large for the enlarged Panama Canal .

planning

In 2016, the company Cansec Costa Rica CSCR SA submitted its traffic route plan for the construction of a Canal Verde Interoceánico to the Consejo Nacional de Concesiones (CNC) and the Ministry of Transport of Costa Rica . It includes the construction of a container port in Parismina, 40 km north of Puerto Limón , as well as a 315 km long 10-lane motorway and a railway connection in the flat north of the country near the border with Nicaragua to the bay of Santa Elena on the Pacific. Both endpoints received an airport, power plants and other infrastructure. The cost would be 16 billion US dollars and be raised by an international group of investors. The containers could be transported from coast to coast in 27 hours, faster and cheaper than through the Panama Canal. The project could be completed in a construction period of five years.

Another company, America's Gateway Development Corporation Ltd. , however, plans to build the container port in Moín near Puerto Limón and to build only one rail link for reasons of environmental protection and costs. The location of the port on the Pacific coast has not yet been specified, but it would be outside the Guanacaste and Santa Rosa National Parks . This project would also cost 16 billion US dollars and generate 80,000 jobs. The planned construction time is also five years here and the project would be completed exactly when the need for an alternative connection to the Panama Canal for mega-ships increases.

Political decision

On April 16, 2020, the government agency CNC announced its decision to reject the Cansec company's plan after careful examination, claiming it was not detailed enough. Furthermore, the forecast of the expected transport volume of 60 million TEUs annually is too speculative and unrealistic. It corresponds to almost four times the container load that is currently (2020) passing the Panama Canal. The company said it would appeal.
