Puerto Limón is the capital of the Limón province of the same name in the Central American state of Costa Rica .
Puerto Limón is the country's main port on the Caribbean coast and has around 61,000 inhabitants, mostly of African descent. Originally from Jamaica , these workers were brought here in the late 19th century to build the railway line from San José to Puerto Limón. The railway line let the country's exports, especially bananas, grow rapidly. Until the line was shut down, the city was Costa Rica's main port. The banana plantations are a strong economic factor in the Limón province. In the north of the city begins the Tortuguero Canal, which stretches around 200 km behind the coast to Nicaragua and connects many rivers and waterways. Boat tours are offered here, on which you can observe and photograph the local flora and fauna.
history
In 1502, Christopher Columbus landed here on his fourth voyage. Every year in autumn there is a big fair in memory of this with a parade of steel drum groups, to which foreign tourists also come.
Puerto Limón was officially founded in 1854 by Philipp JJ Valentini with government support.
In 1921 the Roman Catholic Apostolic Vicariate Limón was established, which was elevated to the diocese of Limón in 1994 .
