East Point is a city in Fulton County in the US state of Georgia with 33,712 inhabitants (as of 2010).

East Point is directly adjacent to Atlanta to the north and northeast , Hapeville to the southeast, and College Park to the south .

history

The name East Point refers to the fact that the place was the eastern terminus of what was then the Atlanta & West Point Railroad . When the settlement was founded in 1870, 16 families lived here. The place was named the City of East Point in 1887.

According to the 2010 census, the then 33,712 inhabitants were distributed over 13,333 inhabited households, which gives an average of 2.50 people per household. There are a total of 17,225 households.

58.0% of the households were family households (consisting of married couples with or without offspring or one parent with offspring) with an average size of 3.25 persons. There were children under the age of 18 in 33.3% of all households and persons aged 65 or over in 17.6% of all households.

28.8% of the population were younger than 20 years, 31.4% were 20 to 39 years old, 26.2% were 40 to 59 years old, and 13.6% were at least 60 years old. The mean age was 33 years. 47.4% of the population were male and 52.6% were female.

16.1% of the population identified themselves as whites , 74.6% as African American , 0.4% as Indians and 0.8% as Asian Americans . 6.0% said they belonged to another ethnic group and 2.0% to several ethnic groups. 11.5% of the population was made up of Hispanics or Latinos .

The average annual income per household was 36,863 USD , while 28.0% of the population lived below the poverty line.

East Point is crossed by Interstates 85 and 285 , US Highway 29, and Georgia State Routes 6 and 154 . The city is connected to the Atlanta Metro . The nearest airport is Atlanta Airport (immediately south of the metropolitan area).

The crime rate in 2010 was 744 points (US average: 266 points) in the high range. There were seven murders, 15 rapes, 205 robberies, 132 physical injuries, 1228 break-ins, 1955 thefts, 461 car thefts and six arson attacks.
