Jairo Mora Sandoval (born March 22, 1987 in Puerto Limón ; † May 31, 2013 ) was a Costa Rican biologist , environmental activist and animal rights activist . Among other things, he campaigned for the protection of leatherback turtles .

engagement

Mora Sandoval had filed several complaints against the looting of turtle eggs and made the cases public via the media and social networks . In view of the increasing presence of drug trafficking in the region and the parallel growing black market for eggs, he campaigned for a sanctuary on Moin Beach and often spent nights patrolling the surrounding beaches to protect the breeding grounds. He worked for Paradero Öko-Tour and supported Widecast, the Wider Caribbean Sea Turtle Conservation Network .

assassination

On May 31, 2013, Sandoval's body was found tied up on Moin Beach near the port city of Limón. Contrary to earlier reports, he was not killed by a shot in the head, but by asphyxia , probably caused by a blow to the back of the head. His death caused outrage far beyond the borders of Costa Rica.

The murder of Mora Sandoval was one of a series of less internationally recognized murders of conservationists in Costa Rica. From 1989 to 2016 ten conservationists were murdered in the country and none of the perpetrators were identified.

The three identified perpetrators were initially acquitted because of the investigation mishaps. In March 2016, a Costa Rican court sentenced her to long prison terms.

reception

In his honor, the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society named one of their ships after him. This has been used in Operation Sunu Gaal since January 2014 . In cooperation with the Senegalese Ministry of Fisheries and the Coast Guard, action is taken against illegal fishing off the coast of the West African state.
