Netiwot ( Hebrew נתיבות, Arabic نيتيفوت, Eng .: ways , paths ) is a city in southern Israel . It is located in the Besor region . The city, 30 km away from Ashkelon and Be'er Scheva , has 35,631 inhabitants (2018).
history
Netiwot was founded on May 10, 1956 as an immigrant village and was initially called Azata . Its current name was taken from the book of Proverbs of the Bible: "and their (wisdom) ways are peace" (Proverbs 3:17). It is considered an example of an Israeli developing city . Since its inception, the town has suffered from high unemployment , low investment and relative poverty .
The population consists mainly of oriental Jews and immigrants from the former Soviet Union .
In contrast to the neighboring developing cities Ofakim and Sderot , the city has experienced a certain boom in recent years. Netiwot has become a place of pilgrimage as two important contemporary rabbis are buried in the city cemetery:
- the Baba Sali (Rabbi Yisrael Abuhatzeira)
- Rabbi Shalom Ifargan
Hundreds of thousands of religious Jews come to the annual commemoration festival of the rabbis and pray at their graves.
Its importance as a place of pilgrimage in recent years has resulted in the city becoming increasingly religious and dozens of religious institutions being built. The esteemed Rabbi Yissochor Meir (1927–2011), Rosh Yeshivat Hanegew in Netivot since 1961, played a central role in this development .
The city is located on the main road from Beersheba to Ashkelon. The road to Gaza begins at Netivot . The town is to be connected to the Israeli rail network by 2013 .
On December 27, 2008, Netivot was first hit by a rocket fired from the Gaza Strip. The Grad missile hit a residential area and killed Beber Vaknin (58 years old) an immigrant from Ethiopia .
The area around the city is strongly characterized by agriculture.
