Tomocichla (from Greek "tomos" = tree stump + cichla ; probably because of the shape of the teeth) is an American genus of cichlids . The distribution area of the genus is in southern Central America and ranges from Nicaragua to Costa Rica to western Panama .

features

Tomocichla species grow to be 25 to 30 centimeters long, females stay smaller. The body of the Tomocichla species is more or less elongated, but the body is higher than that of Theraps or Rheoheros . From the genus Cichlasoma , to which one of the Tomocichla species was previously included, the genus mainly differs in the position of the pelvic fins , which are shifted backwards in Tomocichla . The conical and flattened teeth in the front section of the lower jaw and the rounded back and anal fin are considered diagnostic features of the genus. The number of spines in the anal fin is four or five. The mouth is small and underneath, the lips are well developed. Tomocichla species are dark and whitish on the back, gray or cream-colored on the belly. The genus Tomocichla is most similar to the genus Paraneetroplus , but does not have the forward-facing teeth in the lower jaw that are typical for this genus.

Tomocichla species are open brooders that deposit their clutch on a stone or a root. During reproduction, the fish take on a darker, more contrasting color with conspicuous dark bands and a dark region between the eyes.

species

Currently the genus consists of two described species.

Siebold's cichlid , which was assigned to the genus for some time, has been assigned to the newly introduced genus Talamancaheros since April 2016 .
