Salvin's cichlid ( Trichromis salvini ) is a freshwater fish from the family of cichlids found in Belize and on the Caribbean side of southern Mexico and Guatemala.

features

Salvin's cichlid reaches a length of 18 to 22 cm and its external shape with the pointed, terminal mouth resembles the fire- mouth cichlid ( Thorichthys meeki ) known from aquaristics . The body is oval and laterally flattened. Depending on the location, the basic color is greenish, washed-out yellow-brown to bright lemon-yellow and often shimmering bluish. Striking is a black longitudinal band that extends from the rear edge of the eye to the tail stalk. It can also be dissolved in individual spots. Another longitudinal stripe extends below the dorsal fin. There are also three to four dark stripes between the eyes and on the forehead. In animals from the Usumacinta and other rivers, the belly is bright red. The dorsal fin is blue-green with a red border, the anal fin and caudal fin are reddish. The striking colors, which become even more intense during the breeding season, show both sexes. The fins of the males are more drawn out.

Way of life

Salvins cichlid lives in slow to fast flowing rivers and feeds on larger invertebrates and small fish. He's a substrate spawner . A clutch can contain 500 to 600 eggs.

Systematics

The fish species was first described as Heros salvini by the German zoologist Albert Günther in 1862 and named after the person who caught the type specimens . The type locality is Lake Petén Itzá in Guatemala. Later the species was first assigned to Nandopsis , then to the collective genus Cichlasoma . However, the species is systematically isolated and has been identified in various phylogenetic studies as a sister species of Thorichthys , Cryptoheros nanoluteus or a large clade from various different genera. For this reason, a new, monotypical genus was introduced for the species in mid-2015 . The “tri” in the generic name refers to the three colors of the species (yellow, red and blue).
