The Cichlasomatini are a tribe of the American cichlid subfamily Cichlinae . The distribution area extends from the Orinoco in northern South America, over the Amazon basin to northern Argentina . The cichlasomatini include the chestnut cichlid ( Cleithracara maronii ) and the blue -spotted cichlid ( Andinoacara pulcher ), which are popular aquarium fish.

features

The close relationship of these externally different genera is based on molecular biological investigations and is hardly supported by morphological characteristics. They are laterally flattened, high-backed and only slightly stretched and thus correspond to the "basic pattern" of the cichlids without particularly deviating body shapes, such as those found in the cichlids. B. occur with the Heroini or the Geophagini . All cichlasomatini have relatively large scales, a characteristic arrangement of scales in front of the dorsal fin (with eight scales on the midline instead of more than 10 scales). All are substrate spawners .
