Ivanacara is a two species genus of South American cichlids . The representatives of the genus occur in river areas within the South American continent, namely in the middle and upper catchment of the Brazilian Rio Negro (here the species Ivanacara adoketa ) and in the middle and upper reaches of the Essequibo above the Tumatumari Falls (here the species Ivanacara bimaculata ) . The generic name consists of the Russian given name Iwan (after Iwan the Terrible ) and "Acará", the Tupí-Guaraní expression for cichlids, and was given because of the strongly developed intraspecific aggression.

features

The two Ivanacara species are very small cichlids with a beefy shape and a rounded head profile. The males become 8 to 9 cm long, the females remain about 3 cm smaller. The two species are very similar to the Nannacara species widespread in the coastal areas of northeastern South America, but differ significantly from Nannacara in numerous features of the body, in basic details of brood care and in the pattern of the young animals .
