Ivan (name)
Iwan ( Cyrillic Иван , historically Иоанн Ioann ) or Ivan is a Slavic variant of the male given name Johannes .
Word origin and spelling
The name goes back to the Greek ᾿Ιωάννης Iōánnēs ( John ), which comes from Hebrew and means “God is gracious”. Today's Иван ( Iwan ) arose from the Church Slavonic Іѡанъ Ioan . In Spanish this corresponds to the name Juan .
The transcription from the Cyrillic alphabet (e.g. from Bulgarian, Russian, Ukrainian) is Iwan in German . Written with Latin letters Ivan , the name can be found e.g. B. in Croatian.

distribution
In the Slavic-speaking area, the name is as common as the variants Johannes in the German or John in the Anglo-American language area. It is considered the "typical Russian name par excellence" and is colloquially a term for Russians in general ("The Iwan" as pars pro toto ). During the two World Wars and the Cold War, it got a somewhat negative connotation in German and English ( ethnophaulism ), comparable to Fritz in Russian and English. Iwan Iwanowitsch Iwanow has the same or similar meaning in Russian as Karl Mustermann or Otto normal consumer in German.
