Wilfred D. Ivan

Wilfred D. Iwan (born May 21, 1935 in Pasadena ) is an American civil engineer.

Ivan received his bachelor's degrees in 1957 and his master's degree in 1958 from Caltech , where he received his PhD in 1961. He was then an Assistant Professor at the United States Air Force Academy in Colorado and from 1964 Assistant Professor, 1967 Associate Professor and 1972 Professor of Applied Mechanics at Caltech, where he retired in 2004. From 1992 to 2008 he was director of the Earthquake Engineering Research Laboratory.

He deals theoretically and experimentally with the behavior of mechanical structures in earthquakes.

In 1997 he received the Nathan M. Newmark Medal and in 2007 he received the Von Karman Medal . He is a member of the National Academy of Engineering (1999).
