Iwan Alexejewitsch Demidow ( Russian Иван Алексеевич Демидов ; English transcription Ivan Demidov ; born June 27, 1981 in Moscow ) is a professional Russian poker player . He is nicknamed The Mad Russian .

Personal

Demidow graduated from Lomonosov University in 2004 in mathematics in his native city.

Poker career

Demidow played the real-time strategy game StarCraft and came to poker in 2004 after completing his studies . In 2006 he started playing prestigious live tournaments . In July 2008 he reached the Main Event of the World Series of Poker (WSOP) in the Rio All-Suite Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas the final table , which was played in November of 2008. There he took second place behind Peter Eastgate and won prize money of around 5.8 million US dollars . In the run-up to the final table, Demidow had also reached the final table at the main event of the WSOP Europe in London in early October 2008 and came in third there for the equivalent of more than 600,000 US dollars.

All in all, Demidow has earned almost seven million US dollars with poker in live tournaments, making him the third most successful Russian poker player after Igor Kurganow and Wladimir Trojanowski . Demidow was part of Team PokerStars under the nickname Ivan Demidov until the end of 2015 .
