The Inca stone cichlid ( tahuantinsuyoa macantzatza ) is a freshwater fish from the family of Cichlidae . The epithet was the language of living there Shipibo-Conibo borrowed ( macan = "stone", tzatza = "fish") and plays on its habitat on gravelly and stony river sections in the catchment area of the Río Aguaytía , a tributary of the Ucayali River in Eastern Peru , on. So far only one other species of the genus Tahuantinsuyoa is known. It is the cichlid Tahuantinsuyoa chipi from the catchment area of ​​the Río Pachitea in Peru, also described by Sven Oscar Kullander .

Way of life

In tahuantinsuyoa macantzatza is a larvophilen, biparental mouthbrooders . They spawn on small stones, leaves and pieces of wood, which are turned over and guarded by their parents. After hatching, the young fish are taken in the mouth by the male or female . The parents take turns in mouth brooding. If there is no danger, the fry are let out of the mouth and collected again if there is danger.

These freshwater ornamental fish are kept in aquariums from 160 liters at a neutral or slightly acidic pH value and a temperature of 24 to 29 degrees Celsius. The young fish can easily be raised with Artemia salina .
