The Río Pachitea is a 340 km (including headwaters: 645 km) long left tributary of the Río Ucayali in eastern central Peru in the provinces of Oxapampa ( Pasco region ) and Puerto Inca ( Huánuco region ).
River course
The Río Pachitea emerges 11 km east-southeast of the city of Ciudad Constitución at the confluence of the Río Palcazú (left) and Río Pichis (right). The Río Pachitea flows through the Vorandine region, initially in a predominantly northward direction, later in a north-east direction. After 15 km the river crosses the provincial border to Puerto Inca. The Rio Pachitea shows a strongly meandering behavior along its entire length . At river kilometer 205 the provincial capital Puerto Inca lies on the right bank of the river. At river km 140, the smaller tributary Río Shebonya flows into the river on the left. This became famous through a plane crash in the vicinity in 1971. The settlement Tournavista is at river kilometer 78 , at river kilometer 30 the settlement Honoria , both on the left bank of the river. Near Honoria, the small river Shanay-timpishka , which is fed by hot springs, flows into the Río Pachitea on the left. This finally flows into the Río Ucayali 40 km south of the city of Pucallpa .
Catchment area
The Río Pachitea drains an area of about 29,200 km². The province of Oxapampa extends over the south of the catchment area and the province of Puerto Inca extends over the north of the catchment area. In the west, the Cordillera Huaguruncho , part of the Peruvian Central Cordillera , forms the watershed to the Río Huallaga . In the south the catchment area of the Río Pachitea borders on that of the Río Perené , in the north on that of the Río Aguaytía . The Sira Mountains ( Gran Pajonal ) rise east of the Río Pachitea . The Río Ucayali flows east of the mountain range running in north-south direction. The mountain range ends in the north on the right bank of the Río Pachitea not far from its mouth. To the south the mountain range reaches heights of over 3000 m and finally merges with the Peruvian Eastern Cordillera, which runs further west.
