The Río Palcazú is the 183 km long left headwaters of the Río Pachitea in eastern central Peru in the Oxapampa province ( Pasco region ).
River course
The Río Palcazú arises at the confluence of the Río Bocáz (left, 37 km) and Río Cacazú (right, 35 km) at an altitude of about 450 m . The two source rivers arise in the eastern foothills of the Cordillera Yanachaga . The Río Palcazú initially flows along the western flank of the Cordillera de San Matías-San Carlos , a ridge running in NNW-SSE direction, over which the San Matías-San Carlos forest reserve extends. At river kilometer 117, immediately below the confluence of the Río Iscozacín, the town of Iscozacín is located on the left bank of the river. Further downstream, the rivers Río Chuchurras , Río Lagarto and Río Mairo also flow into the Río Palcazú from the left. At river kilometer 64 the Río Pozuzo meets the Río Palcazú from the left. The river then turns east and cuts through the Cordillera de San Matías-San Carlos. The Río Palcazú passes the city of Ciudad Constitución and finally meets the Río Pichis coming from the south , with which it joins the Río Pachitea.
Catchment area
The approximately 9890 km² catchment area of the Río Palcazú extends over the province of Oxapampa and parts of the provinces further west. In the west, the Cordillera Huaguruncho , part of the Peruvian Central Cordillera , forms the watershed to the Río Huallaga . In the south, the Cordillera Yanachaga separates the catchment area from that of the Río Perené . Further east is the catchment area of the Río Pichis, further north that of the Río Aguaytía .
