Pucallpa ( puka hallpa means red earth in the Quechua language ) is a rapidly growing city in the Amazon region of the South American Andean state of Peru and the capital of the Ucayali region . It is located 155 m above sea level on the banks of the Río Ucayali , one of the two headwaters of the Amazon. The nearest town is Tingo María , 250 km away. The city is located in the Callería district of the Coronel Portillo province , of which it is the administrative seat. The population was 144,207 in the 2017 census. 326,040 inhabitants lived in the conurbation.
Pucallpa has been the seat of the Vicariate Apostolic Pucallpa since 1956 .
History and economy
Pucallpa was founded by Franciscans in the 1840s . A smaller settlement had existed at this place since 1534. The area at Ucayali has been inhabited by indigenous people groups such as Shipibos, Conibos and Shetebos (and perhaps also by the Cashibos) since at least the 10th century AD. In 1880 the city of Pucallpa was founded, which is now the capital of the Ucayali region (founded in 1980).
Before the 846 km Lima -Pucallpa Expressway was completed in 1945, Pucallpa was a small, isolated city with no electricity or paved roads. After connecting with Lima, Pucallpa grew by leaps and bounds and is now a center of the surrounding agriculture and industry with numerous sawmills and rosewood oil factories. Pucallpa is also called the 76 km long oil pipeline of the Ganso Azul company , which is located in the southwest of the city. Pucallpa also has a flight connection via the Aeropuerto Internacional Capitán FAP David Abensur Rengifo to Lima, Tarapoto and Iquitos .
