Tingo María is the capital of the Leoncio Prado province in the Huánuco region , Peru , and with 46,191 inhabitants (2017 census) by far the largest town in the province.
The city was founded on October 15, 1938 at the confluence of the Río Monzón and the Huallaga . It is located 545 kilometers northeast of Lima and is 660 meters above sea level on the "Carretera Marginal de la Selva" ("Primeval Forest Road") in the rainforest of Peru. There are several caves nearby; the best known of these is called "Cueva de las Lechuzas" ("Cave of the Owls"), although the birds that live there are not owls but fat swallows (Steatornis caripensis). One of the city's landmarks is “La bella durmiente” (literally “the sleeping beauty” = “ Sleeping Beauty ”), a mountain range whose silhouette gives the impression of a woman lying down. Both sights are located in the Tingo María National Park, 6.5 kilometers away .
