The Río Monzón is an approximately 105 km long left tributary of the Río Huallaga in central Peru in the provinces of Huamalíes and Leoncio Prado of the Huánuco region .

River course

The Río Monzón has its source in the Peruvian Central Cordillera at an altitude of about 3600  m , 5 km northeast of Jircan . The upper reaches of the Río Marañón runs 4 km further west. The Río Monzón flows through the districts of Jircan and Monzón in the north of the province of Huamalíes in an easterly direction. From river kilometer 84 the national road 14A follows the course of the river. At river kilometer 71, the Quebrada Tampuy Chico meets the river at the Maravillas settlement coming from the south. At river kilometer 64 is the village of Monzón , the capital of the district of the same name, on the southern bank of the river. At river kilometer 45, at the settlement of Tazo Grande , the Río Tasco Chico flows into the river from the left. Between river kilometers 36 and 12, the border with the province of Leoncio Prado further north runs along the course of the river. The Río Monzón then flows through the province of Leoncio Prado. From river kilometer 25, the Río Monzón gradually turns south. 12 km above the mouth, the Río Patay Rondos meets the Río Monzón when coming from the south. National road 14A crosses the river 3 km above the mouth. In the last two kilometers, the Río Monzón cuts through a ridge that flanks the river valley of the Río Huallaga to the west. Finally, the Río Monzón reaches the Río Huallaga southwest of the provincial capital Tingo María at an altitude of about 642  m . The Tingo María National Park is located on the south bank of the Río Monzón about one kilometer above the estuary.

Catchment area

The Río Monzón drains an area of ​​around 2600 km². In the south, the catchment area of the Río Monzón borders on that of the Río Jarahuasi , in the west on that of the Río Marañón and in the north on the catchment areas of the Río Yanajanca and Río Magdalena .
