Al Dreares

Albert Alfred "Al" Dreares (* 4. January 1929 in Key West , Florida ) is an American drummer of modern jazz .

Al Dreares, who was a school friend of Fats Navarro , studied at the Hartnett Conservatory in New York. His career began in the bands of Earl King (with whom the first recordings were made), Paul Williams 1953/54 and Teddy Charles 1955. In the following year he also worked with Charles Mingus and with Randy Weston , in 1957 with Freddie Redd , on his album San Francisco Suite he starred, as well as with Kenny Burrell . In 1958 he played with Gigi Gryce , Jerome Richardson and in 1959 with Phineas Newborn and with his own ensemble. He also played with Mal Waldron , Frank Strozier , Freddie McCoy and Bennie Green on recordings; he later played with Lionel Hampton , Lucky Thompson , Don Pullen , Harold Ousley (1972), Paul Quinichette (1976) and Slide Hampton (1978). In the field of jazz, according to Tom Lord , he was involved in recording sessions between 1955 and 1979, most recently in the Bross Townsend Quintet (with Richard Williams , Mario Schneeberger , Peck Morrison ). From 1979 to 1983 he performed in Brooklyn with his own formation; In 1985 he moved to Miami .
