Richard Gene Williams (born May 4, 1931 in Galveston , Texas, † November 5, 1985 ) was an American jazz trumpeter .

Williams first played the tenor saxophone, but switched to the trumpet as a teenager. He received the basis of his musical training at Wiley College. After graduating in 1951, he served in the US Air Force. In 1956 he played for three years with Lionel Hampton , with whom he also toured Europe. He then settled in New York City , where he did his Masters at the Manhattan School of Music in 1961. During this time he played with Charles Mingus . In 1960 he recorded his only album as a leader for Candid , New Horn in Town . During the next few years he played on Broadway , in the Orchestra USA with Max Roach , Quincy Jones , Duke Ellington , Booker Ervin , Yusef Lateef and the Thad Jones / Mel Lewis Orchestra . In the early 1970s he lived in Europe and led a quartet there. He also worked on Gil Evans ' album Svengali . He later led a quintet with Harold Vick . Then he performed with the Mingus Dynasty . In the field of jazz, according to Tom Lord , he was involved in 134 recording sessions between 1959 and 1983, most recently with Vern Fridie and Walter Bishop junior ( The Jazz Deciples ).
