Cincelichthys ( Sp .: "Cincel" = chisel + Greek : "ichthys" = fish) is a genus of cichlids (Cichlidae) that occursin northern Central America. The distribution area includes rivers and lakes of southeastern Mexico, Belize and Guatemala that flow into the Caribbean. It extends from the catchment area of Río Grijalva and Usumacinta to Lake Izabal .

features

Cincelichthys species reach lengths of 20 to over 40 cm and have a high-backed, oval or almost round body. The small mouth stands up slightly, the lower jaw protrudes a little. Characteristic of cincelichthys styles are their chisel-like teeth. They distinguish the genus from all other herichthyinen cichlids (closer relationship of Herichthys ), with the exception of Kihnichthys . Above and below the sideline , there are irregular bands on the sides of the body. The fish have black scales scattered along the sidelines. Dorsal, anal, and caudal fins are patterned with pale or white spots. A small black spot lies on the tail stalk, which is large in the very similar genus Kihnichthys . Cincelichthys species are partially plant-based.

Systematics

There are two types described:

For a long time, both species belonged to the collective genus Cichlasoma at the time, and for a while also to Theraps . For a long time it has been clear that the two species are not particularly closely related to the core group of Cichlasoma around the type species Cichlasoma bimaculatum . They were therefore separated as the "Cichlasoma" - bocourti group, but the generic name continued to be used in quotation marks, as no new one was available. This changed in August 2015 when a team of ichthyologists introduced the genus Cincelichthys for the two species . Cincelichthys does not belong to the tribe Cichlasomatini , like Cichlasoma , but to the tribe Heroini and there to a clade of cichlids known as Herichthyines (after Herichthys ), which are mainly found in northern Central America.
