Kihnichthys ufermanni ( Syn .: Cichlasoma ufermanni , Theraps ufermanni , Vieja ufermanni ) is a little researched cichlid species that occurs on the Caribbean side of Central America in the Usumacinta river basin in the Guatemalan province of Peten and in southeastern Mexico.

features

Kihnichthys ufermanni becomes a maximum of 25 cm long and has a typical, beefy cichlid shape with a large, high head and a small mouth. Diagnostic features of the species and genus are a dark spot on the middle and rear section of the tail peduncle, and spade-shaped or chisel-shaped teeth in the front section of the upper and lower jaw. The combination of these characteristics distinguishes Kihnichthys ufermanni from all other herichthyinen cichlids (North Central American clade of Heroini ). The similar genus Vieja has a larger spot on the tail stalk and conical or two-pointed teeth. Cincelichthys has spade-shaped teeth but a smaller spot on the tail stalk.

Systematics

The cichlid species was described in 2002 by the French R. Allgayer as Vieja ufermanni , later also assigned to the genera Cichlasoma and Theraps and has been the only species of the genus Kihnichthys that is the sister genus of Theraps since mid-2015 . The genus name was given in honor of Herman A. Kihn, who explored the fish fauna of Guatemala all his life.
