AlphaBay was a darknet market operated as a hidden service in the Tor network , which went online in December 2013 and primarily traded fraud and digital goods , but also illegal drugs , prescription drugs and weapons . The anonymous crypto currencies Bitcoin and Monero were accepted as means of payment . Operation was terminated by the judiciary in July 2017.

After Agora went offline in August 2015, AlphaBay was the largest darknet market in terms of the number of product listings. Since April 2016, the platform has also been used as a coin mixer (service for anonymizing cryptocurrency transactions, comparable to Grams Helix and Bitcoin Fog ).

The End

On July 4, 2017, the platform was switched off as part of Operation Bayonet, along with Hansa and some other darknet markets. The Thai police arrested the same day at the request of the United States a 26-year-old Canadian Bitcoin experts determined, considered the founder of alphabay and decency whose extradition to the United States. According to the Thai authorities, the man committed suicide a little later in his cell.
