Pete McGuinness (born September 2, 1963 in Hartford (Connecticut) ) is an American modern jazz musician ( trombonist , singer, arranger , band leader ) who works as a university lecturer.

Live and act

Pete McGuinness began his high school jazz education in West Hartford , then studied at the New England Conservatory of Music and earned a Bachelor of Music (1986) from the University of Miami and a Masters from the Manhattan School of Music . He has been part of the New York City jazz scene since 1987 . He played u. a. with Maria Schneider , Lionel Hampton , Jimmy Heath , the Woody Herman Orchestra, Mike Holober and Jim Cifelli ; he also worked in Broadway orchestras. As a composer and arranger, he has worked for Dave Liebman , the Westchester Jazz Orchestra, Charles McPherson and the New Jersey City University jazz ensemble. Since the 2000s he has led his own big band , The Pete McGuinness Jazz Orchestra , with which he has given concerts in clubs such as the Blue Note , the Jazz Gallery and the Iridium Jazz Club . As a vocalist he has sung in the Jimmy Heath Big Band and in vocal ensembles such as the Manhattan Vocal Project and The Faux Freshmen . His debut album Slipping In was created in 1998 , followed in 2006 by his first big band album First Flight

McGuinness taught at New Jersey City University in Jersey City for 17 years ; In 2011 he was appointed professor at William Paterson University in Wayne, New Jersey .

Prizes and awards

His arrangement of the track "Smile" from his debut album was nominated for a Grammy Award in 2008. In the critical poll of the Down Beat he was featured in the same year as the arranger's rising star . As a vocalist, he was a semi-finalist in the Thelonious Monk Vocalist Competition in 1994 ; In 2000 he won the Jazzmobile vocal competition .
