Jim Cifelli (born May 11, 1961 in Yorktown Heights , Westchester County , New York ) is an American jazz musician ( composer , arranger , trumpeter , flugelhornist ).

Live and act

Cifelli grew up in the suburbs of New York City and moved to Manhattan in 1989 ; There he was in the early and mid-1990s co-leader of the Uptown Jazz Orchestra , a New York big band. He then founded his own New York Nonet , for which he wrote compositions and arrangements influenced by Gil Evans and Manny Albam . He was also working as a composition teacher at that time. Members were trombonist Pete McGuinness , trumpeter / flugelhornist Andy Gravish, tenor saxophonist Joel Frahm , alto and soprano saxophonist Cliff Lyons, guitarist Pete McCann and the drummerTim Horner ; Cifelli's wife Barbara also played on various woodwind instruments. In working with his nonet, Cifelli sees himself less in the role of the soloist than in the way Duke Ellington worked with his piano and plays more the role of arranger, composer and band leader.

In early 1998 the first album of Cifelli's New York Nonet was released; Bullet Trane on his own label Short Notice Music , with a rendition of Herbie Hancock's Dolphin Dance and John Coltrane's Countdown . The second album So You Say was created in 1998 and was released on the Dutch label A-Records . The third album Tunnel Vision was released in 2003. His next project, Groove Station , is an eclectic mix of jazz, soul and funk elements.

As arranger, Cifelli names Oliver Nelson , Gil Evans and Thad Jones as main influences; his work also borrows from Art Blakeys Jazz Messengers .

The authors Richard Cook and Brian Morton consider Jim Cifelli to be an impressive arranger and bandleader who would succeed in playing his nonet with the power of a large orchestra.
