Jason Rigby

Jason Rigby (born December 2, 1974 ) is an American jazz musician ( tenor saxophone , also flute and bass clarinet ).

Live and act

Jason Rigby, who comes from Cleveland, first had lessons from Ernie Krivda and played in his Fat Tuesday Big Band , with which the first recordings were made , during his high school years in the mid-1990s ( Perdido , 1996). He then studied music at Youngstown State University in Ohio, where he had lessons with Tony Leonardi, played in the YSU Jazz Ensemble and earned his bachelor's degree ( summa cum laude ). He completed his master's degree at the New York Manhattan School of Music ; he also took private lessons from Dick Oatts , Rich Perry and Mike Abene . During this time he received the Down Beat Award for Best College Instrumentalist .

Since 1998 Rigby is mainly active in the New York jazz scene; since then he has worked a. a. with Eivind Opsvik ( Overseas , 2002), Scott DuBois , Kris Davis ( Life Span , 2004), Pete McGuinness , Mark Guiliana , Jeff Davis and Jon Irabagon . In 2005 he recorded his debut album Translucent Space ( Fresh Sound New Talent ), u. a. with Soo-Kyung Park , Mike Holober , Cameron Brown and Mark Ferber . Rigby is known for "his captivating inside-outside improvisations "; According to Down Beat , Rigby's tenor sound reflected "the expressionist [heights] flights of Ornette Coleman and Joe Henderson ."

In the field of jazz he was involved in 21 recording sessions between 1998 and 2012. In the 2010s he worked a. a. with Kyle Eastwood , Mike Holober ( Hiding Out , 2019) as well as in the trio projects Double Drums (with Jeff Davis and Mark Ferber), Heavy Merge (with Russ Lossing , Jeff Davis) and in the Detroit-Cleveland Trio with Gerald Cleaver and Cameron Brown. He has taught at City College of New York , The New School, and Stony Brook University . In 2017 he presented the album ONE ( Fresh Sound New Talent ) with his Detroit-Cleveland Trio ; In 2018 he worked on Miho Hazama's Grammy-nominated production Dancer in Nowhere .
