Jazz Journal

Jazz Journal (until April 1979 Jazz Journal, then for several decades Jazz Journal International ) is a monthly British jazz magazine that has been published since 1948, making it one of the oldest jazz magazines still published today. It is based in Loughton , Essex (Jazz Journal Limited publisher). One focus is mainstream jazz . The magazine has been associated with Jazz Review since 2009 .

It was founded in May 1948 by Sinclair Traill (died 1981), who was previously co-editor of the magazine "Pick Up: The Record Collectors Guide" from 1946 to 1948. In 1960 Decca Records took over shares, which they sold in 1970 to Novello Publishing, which in turn passed them on to Billboard UK in 1977 and which were eventually taken over by Pitmans. From this, the ex-Pitman manager (and in the 1950s himself a jazz musician on clarinet and saxophone) Eddie Cook (1928-2016) took over the newspaper as part of his severance pay when Pitman retired from the publishing business. He has been the editor since then.

Initially, the magazine had its editorial rooms above the London jazz club The Canteen .

In 2009 the magazine stopped publishing for a short time (last issue in February 2009). According to the publisher Eddie Cook, the occasion was the death of his wife. The magazine was then taken over by another publisher and merged with Jazz Review and continued to appear under the same name Jazz Journal International . Jazz Review was founded in 1998 by the well-known jazz writer Richard Cook and Roger Spence from the Direct Music artist agency. After Cook's death in 2007, it was six months without an editor-in-chief, then Brian Morton took over the editing for a short time in 2008 and, since April 2009, the previous co-editor Mark Gilbert. Direct Music is no longer involved.
