John Dierker

John Dierker (* around 1970 in Baltimore , Maryland ) is an American jazz and improvisation musician ( bass clarinet , clarinet , tenor saxophone ).

Life

Dierker, who studied with Stuart Saunders Smith , has been working in the Baltimore area since the 1990s in the field of free jazz , improvised music, but also noise, indie rock and experimental music, etc. a. with Peter Zummo , Jason Willett , Jad Fair , John Hughes and the formation The Basement Boys . For several years he was a member of Lafayette Gilchrist's band The New Volcanoes . At the beginning of 2001 he recorded his debut album Spy Satellite (Generate Records, 2002) with his 1992 trio with Jonathan Vincent (piano) and Jeff Arnal (drums) . Glenn Astarita ( All About Jazz ) describes him as an important improvisation stylist whose concept is enhanced with howling lines, interjections from blues- soaked choruses and an energy development similar to Albert Ayler .

He currently plays in various formations a. a. with Susan Alcorn , Michael Formanek , Charlotte Hug , Dave Ballou, and Will Redman ; 2018 with Joe Morris and Ben Hall . In the field of jazz he was involved in eleven recording sessions between 1994 and 2016, most recently with Lafayette Gilchrist . Dierker is also a music educator at Towson University College.
