Thierry Lang

Thierry Lang (born December 16, 1956 in Romont FR ) is a Swiss jazz musician ( piano , composition ).

Live and act

Lang received classical piano training from the age of five and studied classical music at the Montreux Conservatory until he was 21 , but found jazz early on, inspired by musicians such as Erroll Garner and Oscar Peterson . He made his first recording in a duo with the pianist and accordionist Daniel Perrin . A short time later it was part of the Piano Seven project by François Lindemann on his albums Piano Seven and Live! as a pianist and composer.

Since 1986 he has led his own trios (initially with Ivor Malherbe and Marcel Papaux ), but initially also worked as a companion for Raymond Court . In 1990 he released his first album, in 1996 he received a recording contract with Blue Note Records . Tours and recordings quickly made him known internationally. He worked with Toots Thielemans Franco Ambrosetti , Ray Anderson , Billy Cobham and Tina Turner . In 2003, with the support of Didier Lockwood , Paolo Fresu , Olivier Ker Ourio and Andy Scherrer , he published three records ( Reflections Vol. 1-3 ) with his own works. In 2012 he wrote the music for the film Ma nouvelle heloïse by Francis Reusser .

Lang is a professor at the Bern University of the Arts and at the Montreux Conservatory.

Prizes and awards

Lang's album Private Garden was named "Best CD of the Year" in Japan in 1995. Lang has received several awards over the years. He was named “Pianist of the Year” in 1999 and 2000 for Jazz'n More magazine . In 2004 he received the Grand Prix of the Fondation vaudoise pour la culture , and in 2008 an honorary doctorate from the European University in Geneva; in the same year he was awarded the Chevalier des Arts et des Lettres by the French Republic .
