Détente was an American speed and thrash metal band from Los Angeles , California that was founded in 1984, dissolved in 1989, re-formed in 2008 and dissolved again in 2010.

history

In the late 1970s, Dennis Butler, Fred Rascon and Rick Hartwell met at El Cajon Valley High School in San Diego . Butler and Rascon lived next to each other. Guitarist Rascon taught Butler how to play the bass, while Butler taught him to ride a motorcycle. A little later Dennis Butler met the singer Dawn Crosby and a friend of hers met the guitarist Eric. Together they formed the band Majesty. Together they played mostly cover versions of Black Sabbath , Led Zeppelin and Ramones at parties on weekends . In early 1980, Rascon left the band to devote himself to school. Dawn was in a band called First Attack in London and then in the band with Butler in mid-1983. In 1984 this band separated again and the two formed the band Détente. Jim Tutone played the electric guitar and Rob Farr the bass.

In April the band recorded their first demo. Although the songs were by guitarist Jim Tutone, Fred Rascon could already be heard on the demo in his place, as he had left the band with Rob Farr. Rascon also left the band a short time later. Dennis Butler and Dawn Crosby completely re-cast the band, so that in addition to them, guitarists Caleb Quinn and Ross Robinson and bassist Steve Hochheiser were in the band.

This was followed by some appearances and the recordings for the next demo. As a result, the band reached a contract with Metal Blade Records (USA) and Roadrunner Records ( Europe ). An alternate version of the song Widows Walk was featured on Metal Blade's 1986 compilation Metal Massacre VII .

The band played a few gigs in the San Francisco Bay Area until there was a physical altercation with Megadeth and Dark Angel , which resulted in the band being banned from performing. The band then began work on the album Recognize No Authority , which was produced by Dana Strum and recorded in the Los Angeles recording studio at Baby O’s . At the same time, Dawn Crosby and Dennis Butler were also married.

After a performance at the Country Club in Reseda , the band decided to take a break. Butler had an accident at work involving a type of acid that burned a large part of his body. Dawn went on a tour of Europe. Hochheiser and Robinson founded the band Catalepsy. Guitarist Greg Cekalovich, bassist George Robb (ex- Agent Steel ) and guitarist Michael Carlino joined the band as new members . In March 1987, the band played a concert in San Francisco , but Cekalovich could not attend this concert because he was prevented by a conflict with the law. This left the band with Robb a short time later. The band then decided to continue with just one guitarist. Blair Darby, a friend of guitarist Carlino's, joined the band as the new bass player.

In 1987 the band recorded another demo. However, the label was not satisfied with the band's performance, so the label ended the contract. After that, the band worked on another demo that was to be released in 1989. While working on the demo, there were disputes between Michael Carlino and Dawn Crosby. Drummer Dennis Butler played his last concert in Los Angeles and was then replaced by Rob "Wacko" Hunter (ex- Raven ). In addition, Butler got divorced from Crosby.

With this line-up, the band recorded the demo in 1989 at Pyramid Sound Studio in Ithaca , New York , under the direction of Alex Perialis . Instead of bassist Blair Darby, guitarist Michael Carlino was represented on his post. The band reached a contract with Warner Music Group . Rob Hunter left the band and was replaced by Eric Alpert. Since there was already a band called Dètente, the band was renamed Fear of God .

In 2010 the band released another album with Decline on Cognitive Records .

style

The band is credited with an important role in the development of Thrash Metal in the 1980s, comparing them to Znöwhite , Sentinel Beast and Ice Age .
