Samuel Smiles

Samuel Smiles (pronounced: smeils ) (born December 23, 1812 in Haddington , East Lothian Scotland , † April 16, 1904 in Kensington ) was a Scottish writer and reformer.

Life

Smiles was a son (he had ten siblings) of the paper miller Samuel Smiles and his wife Janet Wilson. The Smiles family was very religious, his paternal grandfather belonged as a preacher to the Cameronians (→ Presbyterianism ), a group close to the Covenanters , and his father saw himself as an anti-Burgher .

Smiles attended Patrick Hardie's School in his hometown and joined Dr. Lewins for a medical internship. When a colleague of Lewins settled in Leith three years later , Smiles went with him. That same year (November 1829) Smiles enrolled at the University of Edinburgh to study medicine. The later doctor and author John Brown (1810-1882) was his fellow student there. On November 6, 1832, Smiles received his license to practice medicine and went back to his hometown as a doctor.

During his studies, Smiles wrote smaller texts, all of which remained unpublished. As a doctor in Haddington, he wrote Physical Education, or, The Nurture and Management of Children and had 750 copies printed at his own expense in 1837.

In May 1838, Smiles gave up his practice to take over the editing of the Leeds Times . From 1845 to 1860 he was secretary of various railways. Since then he has lived as a privateer in London . Some of his writings became very popular.

On April 16, 1904, Samuel Smiles died in Kensington and found his final resting place in Brompton Cemetery .
