Vader is a Polish death metal band from Olsztyn, founded in 1983 .

Band history

Vader was founded in the autumn of 1983 by bassist Piotr “Peter” Wiwczarek and guitarist Zbigniew “Vika” Wroblewski, after the first month Wiwczarek switched to guitar. After several line-up changes, the band gave their first concerts in their hometown of Olsztyn in 1985 and appeared on a broadcast on a local radio station, where three pieces were recorded; years later, according to the band, they were falsely distributed as their demo recording . The appearance at the Metalmania -Festival 1986 in front of about 5000 spectators is seen by the band as the first big step and first national success. After that performance, she was invited to a number of national radio programs and concerts. Vika left the band to play less aggressive metal with Raxas. The remaining cast recorded a concert held in the auditorium of today's University of Warmia-Masuria at the end of 1986 , which was released in 1988 with two bonus tracks as a demo recording entitled Live in Decay ; this is considered by the band to be the first official release. In 1988 Czarny left the band because he got married and left Poland. Wiwczarek took over the vocals, and after Jacho left the band because of his police service, he was replaced by the drummer Docent from the hardcore band Slashing Death. Rob left the band a few months later.

In the spring of 1989 Wiwczarek and Docent played the first official four-track demo recording of Necrolust on a radio station in Olsztyn , which was distributed internationally. At this time Vader came into contact with other extreme bands from the international underground and recruited the bassist Jackie (Ex-Evil Death). The band also met their friend and manager Mariusz Kmiolek. This cooperation led to the recording of Morbid Reich in a studio in Olsztyn. The cassette, on the cover of which the band's logo could be seen for the first time, was released in 1990 by the newly founded record company Carnage Records from Warsaw and was rated by the band as the first international success. About 4,000 copies of the cassette were sold within the first few years after its release, making it the best-selling demo recording in history, according to Vader. The band attracted the interest of Earache Records and signed a recording deal for their debut album there. She was also invited to her first foreign tour in the Soviet Union, where she gave three concerts from 1990 to 1991.

In the summer of 1992 the band recorded their debut album The Ultimate Incantation in the rhythm studio in England with producer Paul Johnson after the recordings in Tomas Skogsberg's Sunlight Studios in Stockholm in the spring of 1992 were unsuccessful; these are unofficially distributed as the "Swedish version" of the album. With the help of Earache Records, Vader was able to give his first concerts in the West and went on a tour with Bolt Thrower and Grave through Europe and one with Deicide and Suffocation through the United States. In addition, the band went on their first major tour through Poland as a support act for the then very popular band Proletariat ; one of these performances was recorded and recorded by Baron Records under the title The Darkest Age - Live '93 . At that time, China also joined the band as the second guitarist. This recorded her first music video for Dark Age with the support of MTV Great Britain .

In March 1994 the EP Sothis was recorded in the Modern Sound Studio in Gdynia, which was released via Baron Records; Bassist Jackie had previously been replaced by Shambo. To promote the album, the band went on two European tours with Malevolent Creation . After the end of the collaboration with Earache Records, a contract with Impact / System Shock was signed. In early 1995 Vader began work on the second album De profundis , which was again recorded in Modern Sound Studio with producers Adam Toczko and Tomek Bonarowski; the album was released in Poland via Croon Records, in Europe via Impact / System Shock and in the USA via Conquest Records. The band went on tour with Cannibal Corpse and Immolation in Europe and in the opening act for Monstrosity and Broken Hope in the USA, plus they went on tour in Poland with Proletariat, Sweet Noise and Testor. There was also a video for Incarnation from the Marlboro Festival in Poland. In 1995 and 1996 the band gave around 250 more concerts.

Vader changed the studio in 1996; The following three releases were made in the SELANI studio in their hometown of Olsztyn: the album Future of the Past , which only contained cover versions, the album Black to the Blind , released a year later, and the EP Kingdom in 1998 . In 1997, China quit, unable to cope with the speed and intensity of work on Vader; he was replaced by Mauser by Dies Irae and Christ Agony, who was first listed as a new member in the booklet of "Black to the Blind" and made his debut as a musician on the new songs of the "Kingdom" EP. The band also went on a European tour with Morbid Angel and recorded live in Japan during their first visit to Japan and signed a contract with Marquee / Avalon as Vader's representative in Asia; as a result, released Live in Japan and the three following albums in Japan. At the same time, Vader's first concert video, Vision and Voice, appeared on VHS (later remastered and re-released as DVD More Vision and Voice ) and a music video for Kingdom . At the end of 1998 Vader ended the cooperation with Impact / System Shock and signed with Metal Blade Records .

The band's fourth album, Litany , was recorded in December 1999 at the RED studio in Gdańsk, again with producer Adam Toczko. That year, too, the problems with Doc began, mostly with his drug addiction, which resulted in his suspension and a stay in a rehabilitation facility. Zabek from Yattering replaced him at concerts such as the European tour with Six Feet Under and Nile . Litany was released on Metal Blade Records in the spring of 2000, and to promote the album, the band gave more than 250 appearances over the next two years, including European tours with Deicide and Immortal and Vital Remains , with Gorguts and Cryptopsy , with Dying Fetus and Deeds of Flesh , a first US tour of his own, and another tour of Japan, and festivals in Poland and the rest of Europe. A video for Cold Demons was shot as a promotion . In the meantime, the EP Reign Forever World was released in 2001 via Metal Blade Records in the RED Studio , the last release with Shambo on bass.

Simon von Hunter became Vader's new bass player. In spring 2002 Vader began working on the next album; this was created in the RED Studio with producer Piotr Lukaszewski and was released under the title Revelations . To promote the album, the band performed on four continents and numerous festivals; In Poland, Vader organized the Blitzkrieg tour for the first time together with Decapitated , Frontside and Vesania , these tours also went hand in hand with the promotion of the three following albums, the third also affecting the rest of Europe. A video for Epitaph and the EP Blood were also made . Shortly before its release, Simon was replaced by Novy from Behemoth and Devylin.

At the beginning of 2004 Doc suffered an accident shortly before the start of the recording of the following album, which is why the recordings were postponed and took place in June at the Radio Gdańsk Studio. Because of Doc's relapse, the band was looking for a new drummer and recruited Daray from Vesania, who can be heard for the first time on The Beast . The album was released in late September 2004 through Metal Blade Records and in Poland through Metal Mind Productions ; the special edition also includes a bonus CD with a studio report and videos on Dark Transmission and Choices . As a promotion, the band gave more than 200 concerts around the world, including first appearances in other Eastern European countries and the Balkans. The band also opened for Metallica in Chorzow Stadium and released the concert DVD Night of the Apocalypse . At the end of 2004, Peter suffered a spinal injury while touring Scandinavia, which is why the US tour with Cannibal Corpse and Napalm Death did not take place.

In March 2005, the band finally separated from Doc because of his drug problems; Daray became a full member of Vader. The band also switched to Regain Records from Sweden. In the new line-up, the band played in South America, Great Britain and with Kreator in the USA. In the summer the band recorded the EP The Art of War in the Hertz studio in Bialystok , which contains 4 or 5 tracks in the Japanese version and, according to Vader's biography, represents a new chapter in the band's history. Vader's handwriting also changed, and a video was recorded for This Is the War based on the style of video game animation. Doc died on August 19, 2005 at the age of 35 and was buried on August 24, 2005 in Korsze. The Art of War was dedicated to him. Shortly before the release in November 2005, the band went on another, VADER went on another Blitzkrieg tour in Europe and a US tour.

The first months of 2006 were spent preparing for the album Impressions in Blood , which was recorded in May and released in September. In the meantime, Vader played at major festivals and led the Metal Crusaders tour through the USA with Destruction and Kataklysm . There was also a video for Helleluyah: God Is Dead . With the release of the album, the fourth Blitzkrieg tour began with 90 appearances with God Dethroned , Severe Torture and Nightrage, among others .

2007 began with the continuation of the tour; Vader performed in Japan with Brutal Truth and Cryptopsy, made 30 appearances at festivals in Europe, toured the east with Krisiun , Rotting Christ and Incantation and toured Scandinavia. A concert at the Stodola in Warsaw was recorded and released on Metal Mind Productions as DVD And Blood Was Shed in Warsaw . In autumn the band recorded material with the Wieslawscy brothers in the Hertz studio for their 25th anniversary, which resulted in a double album with new recordings of 25 of the most important Vader pieces. The band also recorded Sword of the Witcher for the video game The Witcher from CD Projekt . Vader's MySpace and YouTube accounts were set up in August . In March 2008 the double album was released under the title XXV , the special edition also contained a DVD with 15 music videos. At this time the tour for Vader's 25th anniversary began with BDM, Cryptopsy and Aborted, among others . Decapitated replaced Novy by Martin for appearances at American festivals. After returning to Poland, Reyash joined the band from Incantation and Christ Agony as bass player. In August 2008, Mauser left the band because he could n't find the time for Vader because of his own project UnSun , and Daray switched to the Norwegian dark metal band Dimmu Borgir , which he had dreamed of before joining Vader. However, he did not say goodbye to Wiwczarek and Vader, but "put forward [...] alleged differences of opinion in the band". Wiwczarek only found out later from the Internet of Daray's move to Dimmu Borgir and only shortly before the anniversary concert for the 25th anniversary of the band that his entire line-up would quit. In order not to spoil the atmosphere, the fans were not informed about this before the performance. A month later the band went on a two-week tour through Scandinavia and the Baltic States with a new line-up; Mauser had been replaced by Wacek "Vogg" Kieltyka from Decapitated, and Daray by Pawel "Paul" Jaroszewicz from Hellborn and Crionix. In December the band began preparations for the album Necropolis , which was announced for September of the following year. Four new tracks were created at Studio Hertz, two of which ( Rise of the Undead and Impure ) were published on Vader's official website in February and March 2009. 2009 began with a European tour with Deicide and Samael in January. At the end of March, pieces for Necropolis were recorded in the Hertz studio . In April Vader left Regain Records and signed with Nuclear Blast , in the same month the band gave several concerts in Poland. Appearances at festivals in the summer and a tour at the end of August to promote the announced album were also planned.

2010 began with a two-week tour through southern Europe together with Marduk and the new Vader guitarist Marek "Spider" Pająk from Esqarial . With this line-up, a tour followed in February and March through Great Britain, Ireland, Scandinavia and the Benelux countries. In April, the band went on the KillFest tour in support of Overkill with guest guitarist Marco Martell from Against the Plague . In March, Reyash was replaced by Hal from Dead Infection, Hermh and Abused Majesty Halicki, who had already contributed the bass on the Best of album XXV for the Terrorizer cover Fear of Napalm . In May Vader went on a two-week European tour with Deicide and Marduk and then on a tour of Eastern Europe. In the first half of 2011 the band prepared the album Welcome to the Morbid Reich in the Hertz studio in Bialystok . In the studio reports, which were regularly published on Vader's homepage, it can be seen that Marek “Spider” Pająk was also heavily involved in the songwriting. Another novelty are growls processed with the pitch shifter . In July, the song Come and See My Sacrifice was released as a free download. Between the recordings and the release of the album, the band went on tour. After the recordings for the new album and a subsequent tour, drummer Pawel "Paul" Jaroszewicz left the band for family reasons. A new drummer could quickly be found in the 21 year old Englishman James Stewart from Divine Chaos. He will be behind the drums from August 2011 and will also be featured on the new album Tibi Et Igni , which will be released on May 30, 2014. With the same line-up, the band released another album on December 14, 2015, a year and a half after Tibi Et Igni , Future of the Past II - Hell in the East , which consisted exclusively of cover versions. Regarding the name, only songs from Eastern European bands can be found here, including Krabathor (some covered groups on the album are therefore not to be confused with better-known bands of the same name such as Thanatos, Merciless Death, Slaughter or Ghost BC). On November 4, 2016, the 16th studio album (and the 11th with exclusively new songs) The Empire followed . After a re-release of the debut album failed due to legal difficulties with Earache Records , the album Dark Age was released in December 2017, in keeping with the 25th anniversary of The Ultimate Incantation , which contained all the songs on the record as new recordings.

Music style and lyrics

Thrash metal elements can be found in Vader's music , so De profundis , for example, was described as the “perfect mixture of Slayer and Morbid Angel ”. Her texts themselves deal with topics such as religion, vanitas , war and often also the works of the American writer Howard Phillips Lovecraft or Friedrich Nietzsche ( Helleluyah ).

Trivia

  • Although the respective bassists who were members of the band at the time were always listed on all releases, Peter almost always recorded the bass tracks in the studio material - which u. a. is due to the lower workload. In addition to the live-in-decay demo recorded under live conditions, the only exception is the album XXV , on which Novy recorded the bass for some songs (although he also played bass in the making-of videos for The Beast was seen). In Welcome to the Morbid Reich , Peter shared the bass tracks with guitarist Spider, who played a key role in the songwriting of the album. As a result, all bassists who played in the band can only be heard on the live releases - but this is continuous, and even Simon, who only played in the band for one year, is documented on the Night of the Apocalypse DVD .
  • Although Spider only joined Vader in 2010 after Vogg left, who wanted to concentrate more on Decapitated again, he could already be heard in 2009 on Necropolis , where he contributed guitar solos to four songs. Before that, he worked with Peter on the Panzer X project , which released the EP Steel Fist in 2006.
  • Hal was first heard on the album XXV in the song "Fear of Napalm" as a guest bassist and is also the regular guitarist of the band Evil Machine , who recorded a song with Peter on vocals with the Onslaught cover Onslaught (Power from Hell) .
  • Common studio recordings from 2008-2010 active live instrumentation with Vogg on second guitar and Reyash on bass do not exist, but three-quarters of that occupation are on the Rammstein -Cover Moscow by the band Crionics to hear on Peter with the then frontman Quazarre shares the vocals, Paul plays the drums and Vogg takes over the accordion.
  • Peter also worked with Vogg's brother Vitek (who also played for Decapitated until he died in an accident ) on the Panzer X project.
  • If you add the three demo albums to the studio / live albums and EPs (which are partly as long as a regular studio album), as well as the two records with cover songs and the anniversary album XXV , as well as Dark Age with the new recordings, the band has a previous output of 26 albums. That makes them - in terms of long-playing records - next to Nunslaughter one of the most productive death metal bands ever.
