Morbid Reich is a demo album by the Polish death metal band Vader , which was released in 1990 via Carnage Records . It was the band's third release after Live in Decay and Necrolust and is considered a milestone in the history of Death Metal. It was able to gain popularity in the then burgeoning Polish metal scene and sell 10,000 copies.

History of origin

The demo was recorded in the summer of 1990 in the Pro-Studio in Olsztyn. The cost of recording was $ 40, double the average salary of the band members at the time. In addition to the band, Władysław Iljaszewicz and Andrzej Włodarski were involved in the recordings as sound engineers, the production was carried out with the support of Mariusz Kmiołek, who was also the owner of Carnage Records. Over 10,000 copies of the cassette were sold and the broadcaster MTV with the program Headbangers Ball confirmed Morbid Reich as the best-selling demo in the history of Death Metal.

Not all of the songs on the album were new. The Final Massacre was already known from the previous demo Necrolust (there, however, in a version more strongly influenced by Thrash Metal ) and Reign Carrion appeared in an originally Polish version on the first demo Live In Decay under the name Trupi Jad , or Deathlike Carrion . The song was one of the very first Vader pieces and was rewritten and partly rearranged for Morbid Reich . The remaining three pieces were new compositions together with the two intros.

The demo was published with an advertising campaign through t-shirts, posters, flyers, etc. which is more typical of full-fledged studio albums - apart from the fact that the album was originally only released on cassette .

Vader toured all over Poland following the release. At the subsequent Strash'ydła 91 performance a year later, Jarosław "China" Łabieniec made his debut as second guitarist and fourth member of the band. Further concerts as a quartet followed, including an appearance at Metalmania in 1991.

With the exception of the intros, all tracks were later re-recorded for the debut album The Ultimate Incantation . Other new recordings followed - except for Breath of Centuries - in 2008 on the anniversary album XXV  and on the new edition of the debut album in 2017 under the name Dark Age , including Breath of Centuries . Another version of Breath of Centuries was released on Kingdom EP in 1998 and The Final Massacre was recorded again for Litany in 2000 . The demo was re-released with its predecessor in 1996 on an album called Reborn in Chaos , before an independent release on CD and record via the label Witching Hour Productions in 2015 .

The cover artwork for the album is by Robert Ganczarski and is also the first to feature the group's longstanding logo.

meaning

With the success of the demo and the resulting new links abroad, the band received a contract with the British music label Earache Records , where their first studio album was released two years later. However, after the release of The Ultimate Incantation , Vader lost the contract.

According to a survey conducted by Machina magazine for the most popular metal albums from Poland, Morbid Reich came in 9th place.
