Cataract was a Swiss thrash metal band.

history

Cataract were founded in the summer of 1998. Originally, the band should only be a project by members of the bands Mine, Damage ID and Cease. In the year it was founded, the band recorded a self-titled demo . This demo sold over 2,000 copies and Cataract became known in both the metal and hardcore scenes.

After a 7 ″ EP and some sampler contributions , the band released their debut album Golem in April 2000 . After the recordings, they looked for a record company and finally found what they were looking for in the US company Ferret Music . The vinyl edition of the album was released by the German company Lifeforce Records .

At the beginning of 2001 the singer Christian "Mosh" Ebert was replaced by Federico Carminitana. From now on the band rehearsed more often and more regularly. Carminitana can be heard for the first time on the EP Martyr's Melodies, which was released a short time later . In the summer of 2001 Cataract toured the USA for the first time and gave concerts with bands such as Unearth , Poison the Well and Most Precious Blood . At the beginning of 2002, Cataract went on their first headlining tour through Central and Eastern Europe.

After the tour, the band recorded their second album, The Great Days of Vengeance , which was released in March 2003 via Lifeforce Records. Again Cataract played many concerts in Europe and ended the year with a tour of Great Britain as support from Stampin 'Ground .

In March 2004, Cataract visited the Antfarm Studio in Denmark to record their third album With Triumph Comes Loss , directed by Tue Madsen . Shortly after recording began, the band signed a deal with Metal Blade Records , which released the album in September 2004. With Triumph Comes Loss received good reviews from the music press and Cataract made a breakthrough in the scene. In December 2004 the band went on their first big tour as part of the No Mercy Tour (alongside Six Feet Under and Nile ). Numerous appearances followed in 2005, including at Wacken Open Air , the Dour Festival and With Full Force Open Air, as well as a European mini-tour with Amon Amarth .

In early 2006, the band recorded their fourth album, Kingdom , which hit stores in May 2006. Shortly after the release of this record there was the second line-up change. Bassist Michael Henggeler has been replaced by Kay Brem. With Kingdom , Cataract were able to maintain their position as one of the most successful European metal core bands. In addition to various festival appearances, the Hell on Earth Tour with Heaven Shall Burn , Maroon and God Forbid was a highlight of the year.

But 2007 should not happen without a line-up change: Simon Füllemann left the band in January and Tom Kuzmic from Disparaged took his place . Kay Brem has been replaced by Nico Schläpfer. With this new line up, the next self-titled album was released in March 2008. The band then took part in the Hell on Earth Tour again.

In 2010 the album Killing the Eternal was released .

In spring 2013, the band announced their breakup due to "other priorities" and creative stagnation. In August 2016, Cataract announced a farewell concert, which took place on March 18, 2017 at the KiFF in Aarau (Switzerland) on the occasion of the tenth anniversary of the Metalmayhem event series.
