Cattle Decapitation ( English for "(beef) cattle beheading") is a Deathgrind band from San Diego ( USA ) founded in 1996 .

history

The band was initially formed as a side project of the grindcore band The Locust in 1996 and consisted of bassist David Astor, drummer Gabe Serbian and guitarist and singer Scott Miller. After Miller left the band, vocalist Travis Ryan joined the band, while Astor switched from bass to drums and Serbian from drums to electric guitar. With this line in 1999 was followed by the EP Human Jerkey , which a year later, the EP Homovore joined. After Troy Oftedal joined the band as the new bass player, the debut album To Serve Man was released . In the same year Josh Elmore joined the band as the second guitarist. Shortly thereafter, guitarist Serbian left the band to play again as a drummer for The Locust. In Germany , the band got into trouble because SPV refused to release the album due to the cover . In November 2002 followed a tour through the USA together with Cannibal Corpse , Hate Eternal and Macabre . After drummer Astor left the band, Michael Laughlin, who previously worked for Creation Is Crucifixion , joined the band as a replacement . This was followed by appearances with Hate Eternal, Deicide and Krisiun . The band then went into the studio with producer Bill Metoyer to record the album Humanure , which was released in mid-June 2004. The album featured ex-singer Miller, drummer Astor and the entire cast of The Locust as guest musicians. The cover was also criticized again and had to be changed. The release was followed by a US tour with Deicide, Goatwhore and Jungle Rot . After the band had calmed down a bit in the following years, a split release appeared in 2005 together with Caninus . At the end of June 2006 the next album Karma.Bloody.Karma followed , whereupon the Locust keyboardist Joey Karam and John Wiese from Sunn O))) could be heard as guest musicians . After Kevin Talley (Ex- Dying Fetus , Misery Index , Chimaira ) was a short drummer in the band, David McGraw joined the band as a new member. At the end of January 2009 the album The Harvest Floor was released . The next album, Monolith of Inhumanity, followed in May 2012 .

style

The band played a mixture of technically demanding grindcore and death metal on their first albums like Humanure , so the music is comparable to that of Carcass , Dying Fetus and Cannibal Corpse. Since their album Monolith of Inhumanity , the songs of the band are still aggressive, but far more melodic than the pieces from the previous albums. Some elements from Deathcore were also processed.

Her texts denounce the mistreatment of animals as well as the consumption of animals and environmental destruction by humans. All band members are vegetarians themselves . Using macabre and brutal Goregrind-like text content, the musicians present their opinions on animal rights .

The intention of the band resembles a mixture of partly radical animal protection by groups like PETA and a fundamentally negative attitude towards people themselves, represented by groups like VHEMT . The nihilistic - misanthropic view of humanity is similar to the theses of Ulrich Horstmann . But even if the self-portrayal of the band can at first glance be rated as offensive agitation, statements in interviews show that, typical of death metal , there is a conscious consciousness between the concrete presentation of the message and the underlying beliefs that are definitely meant and taken seriously thoughtful difference exists.

"Brutal death and extreme violence [in Cattle Decapitation] are not made for mere entertainment at the center of the texts, but are intended to scandalize normal meat production and morally discredit"
