Amenra (pronounced “Amen Ra”) is a Belgian post-metal band that was founded in Kortrijk in 1999 and emerged from the hardcore band Spineless.

history

After the band Spineless split up, Amenra was founded by singer Colin H. van Eeckhout, guitarist Mathieu Vandekerckhove and bassist Kristof Mondy. Colin H. van Eeckhout describes the founding as the most important moment in the band's history, which was given seriousness as a project by the later death of his father. Bjorn Lebon joined them by 2003 and Amenra recorded their debut album in this first permanent lineup. The band constellation has changed only slightly since then. Lennart Bossu joined the band as another guitarist in 2008.

Over the years, Amenra released a large number of split EPs and limited additional material in addition to the regular studio albums. In 2009 the acoustic album Afterlife and the Church of Ra book and DVD were released . In 2012 the live album Live was released with a selection of recordings from Greece, Belgium and the Netherlands. In the same year the band signed a contract with Neurot Recordings.

content

In addition to the metaphors contained in the song lyrics, the musicians and artists summarize all related projects as the Church of Ra and describe the context as a belief and type of belief. Religious themes and a duality of all things are core concepts of the Church of Ra . In terms of personnel, the Church of Ra consists mainly of musicians and visual artists, whose works are presented at various art exhibitions in Belgium and France. All artists are closely associated with Amenra. The works of the various artists flow into the design of the total work of art of the Church of Ra and complement the work of other artists. In addition to the aesthetic and thematic commonalities of the Church of Ra , all facets of the organization should, by means of a self-reflective expression, serve the psychological goal of helping everyone to discover an individual truth.

Religious motifs are reflected in the performances, videos and artwork of the entire Church of Ra . Colin H. Van Eeckhout also sees Amenra, which he describes as the core of the Church of Ra , in an ethical function, without wanting to intervene in an instructive or regulatory manner.

"It's about leading a" good life ", being a" good person ". I will take care not to make any rules here that anyone should adhere to. You have the music and lyrics from which everyone can gain something. Anyway, everyone has their own life, from which everyone can pull something and for which everyone can set their own rules of the game. "

- Colin H. Van Eeckhout

Eeckhout attaches great importance to the ethical and aesthetic concept behind the Church of Ra , which is also reflected in the aesthetic coding and perfecting of the content and design of all perceptible elements of the Church of Ra . From the cover design to music videos and merch articles but also art projects and books to the design of the project's own website , everything is part of this artistic, aesthetic and ethical concept.

style

Amenra are classified as post-metal. In discussions, reference is made to the change between "phases of persistence" and outbreaks in the form of tempo changes and deeply tuned guitar riffs. To narrow down the style, the band is compared to early Isis and Neurosis - a paraphrase that Eeckehout also agreed to in the course of the cooperation with Scott Kelly and Neurosis' own label Neurot Recordings .

“I can't describe how fulfilling it is to receive recognition from those who have walked the path before us, who we respect and to whom we owe immensely. Without neurosis, there would probably never have been amenra. "

- Colin H. Van Eeckhout
