Fantômas is a supergroup from California ( USA ) that plays cross-genre experimental music using a variety of stylistic elements.

history

Fantômas was initially founded under the name Diabolic . The first line-up consisted of initiator, sole composer and singer Mike Patton ( Faith No More , Mr. Bungle ), guitarist Buzz Osborne ( The Melvins ), bassist Trevor Dunn (Mr. Bungle) and drummer Dave Lombardo ( Slayer ), the was represented on the tour 2005 by Terry Bozzio ( Frank Zappa ). Dave Lombardo was not Patton's first choice, but Igor Cavalera ( Sepultura ), whom Patton had initially considered for the post, recommended it. All members were already known before the founding of this project through their participation in other formations and work in parallel in other projects and bands, which in turn underlines the project character of the Fantômas group.

Patton founded his label Ipecac in 1999 at the same time as the band's first album was released , and Fantômas became the label's first product and figurehead with the debut album of the same name .

Musical idea, development and focus

Fantômas is an experimental rock band. The focus of their music is, as the band name suggests, on the musical implementation of cinematic and visual themes. The band does not rely on traditionally structured soundtrack formats and arrangements, but mostly uses the stylistic devices collage and montage as well as frequent abrupt changes in style, tempo and dynamics. In these characteristics, the music of Fantômas is related to the experimental music of some projects by the US saxophonist John Zorn - such as the project Naked City , whose works are also visually and cineastically inspired, as well as the music of Zorn's band Painkiller .

Mike Patton, the creative head of the band, does not have the central role of a frontman as a singer, which is common in rock bands, but often uses his voice for onomatopoeia , corresponding to the function of a musical instrument. Fantômas mainly produce concept albums that follow their own chronology. An exception is the live cooperation with the band The Melvins .

The band 's first, self - titled album pays homage to the anarchist film , comic book and fictional character Fantômas . Using a mix of styles from noise , new age , soundtrack , jazz and black metal , a Fantômas comic was set to music page by page - corresponding to the consecutive title from Book I, Page 1 to Book I, Page 30 .

The second album The Director's Cut follows a similar path . It pays homage to popular horror films and psychological thrillers (including Rosemary's Baby and The Godfather ). Parts of their film music are put into a new context by combining them with noise elements. In contrast to the band's other albums, however, this is a more traditionally structured work that includes clearly named titles and clearly separated pieces.

In 2004 Fantômas published Delìrium Còrdia, a calm and dark composition . This third album consists of a single 70-minute piece and is considered the soundtrack for an imaginary horror film. Early industrial bands like Current 93 or Nurse With Wound were the inspiration for the music style of this album .

The fourth album from 2005, Suspended Animation , returns in speed and dynamism to the style of the first two albums and is thematically and artistically the opposite of the album Delìrium Còrdia, which was recorded at the same time . Suspended animation interprets the idea of cartoons such as Looney Tunes . The thirty individual pieces of music, divided without any recognizable connection, have the title of the days of April 2005 with consecutive dates and are named after more or less obscure holidays from all parts of the world from April's Fool Day to Walpurgis Night.
