Atavistic Records is an American rock - and Jazz - Label .

The label Atavistic Records , which is based in Chicago , was best known for its releases in the area of No Wave and Free Jazz . Recordings and others appeared on the label. a. by Glenn Branca , Nels Cline , Lydia Lunch , Joe McPhee , Ken Vandermark , Pinetop Seven , Swans , Elliott Sharp , Larry Ochs , Mars , Davey Williams , Brian Harnetty and Poem Rocket . The company was founded in 1985 in Columbus, Ohio by Kurt Kellison as a video label that produced live VHS recordings for bands such as Live Skull and The Flaming Lips . In 1988, Kellison moved to Chicago with the label.

The Atavistic Unheard Music Series published by John Corbett includes re-releases of out-of-print improvisation and free jazz recordings, such as numerous albums by Peter Brötzmann that were previously only self-published, or first releases from important festival and radio productions, but also re-releases of the no longer producing label Free Music Production , such as Brötzmann's album Machine Gun .
