Ludicra ( lat. 'Drama') was an American metal / crustcore band from San Francisco, founded in 1998 .

history

Ludicra was founded as a quartet by Jesika Christ, John Cobbett, Christy Cather and Aesop Dekker in San Francisco in autumn 1998 . The band's first appearance took place in February 1999. A few months later, after four or five completed gigs, the singer and bassist Jesika Christ got out again to concentrate more on her own band Sangre Amado. She was replaced by Ross Sewage on bass and Laurie Sue Shanaman as singer. In the now 13-year history of the band, this was the only line-up change.

In 2001 the band recorded their first demo album Excerpts , followed shortly after by the demo Ludicra that same year . The debut album Hollow Psalms was released in the spring of 2002 on the Life is Abuse label. After about two years, the first pressing of the album was sold out, and the band went back to the studio in early 2004 to record the follow-up album Another Great Love Song . During the creation process, Ludicra was offered a recording contract by the head of the traditional American underground label Alternative Tentacles , Jello Biafra , so the band left the label Life is Abus and released the album on Alternative Tentacles.

The EP Ludicra was released in 2006 and shortly thereafter the album Fex urbis lex orbis . After about four years without further publications, in which the band mainly toured and gave concerts, the fourth studio album The Tenant was released in spring 2010 .

Ludicra is currently under contract with Profound Lore Records. Along with bands like weakling she is one of the pioneering bands of the US Bay Area - Black Metal scene. Some of the musicians are also active in other bands. Ross Sewage also plays with Impaled and Aesop Dekker with Agalloch .

style

Ludicra combines influences from second wave Black Metal with punk in her music , as some of the band's musicians come from the punk scene. In addition, there are elements of classic heavy metal and neofolk . In particular, the music of the current album The Tenant also shows progressive rock / metal influences. The lyrics are about desperation, hopelessness, drugs and other urban issues.

The band itself describes their genre as gray metal : "a derivative of black metal".
