Blood Ceremony ( Engl. , Blood Ceremony ') is a Canadian doom metal band around the front woman Alia O'Brien from Toronto . The name of the band comes from the title of the Spanish horror film Ceremonia sangrienta with Lucia Bosè .
history
The band was formed in 2006 and played concerts with Danava , The Illuminati and the Swedes Witchcraft in Canada and the USA . Their self-titled debut album was released in 2008 on the British record label Rise Above Records , which had offered the band a recording contract in 2007 . The following year the band played at the VnV Rock Altitude Festival in Le Locle with The Haunted , Electric Wizard and Samael and then accompanied Electric Wizard on their European tour. The second studio album Living with the Ancients was released in 2011 on Rise Above Records (Europe) and Metal Blade Records (North America). In April there followed a performance at the Roadburn Festival in Tilburg , as well as several concerts in Germany together with the Swedish band Ghost .
Band member Alia O'Brien is studying ethnomusicology and Islamic mysticism at the Faculty of Music at the University of Toronto . In Ramallah and Boston she learned to play the nay , the oriental flute.

style
Blood Ceremony play a mixture of Doom Metal and Psychedelic Rock with influences from Progressive and Folk Rock , which has been compared to the music of Pentagram , Black Sabbath , Jethro Tull and Black Widow . The band's lyrics deal with occult and horror-typical topics. The guitar playing is compared to "Heavy Black Sabbath riffs of the early days", while the singing of Alia O'Brien and the use of a flute contribute to further comparisons with Jethro Tull. Guitarist Sean Kennedy emphasizes the different influences of the band.
