Crisis was an American Metal - band from New York , which was founded in the 1994th The group was also called Skullsick Nation in the meantime .

history

The band was founded in 1994 by guitarist Afzaal Nasirudden. Karyn Crisis joined the band under protest from the original bassist, who spoke out against a singer. Shortly afterwards, Gia Chuan Wang joined the band as the new bass player. The debut album 8 Convulsions followed in the same year . The publication followed several appearances, including 1995 together with Morbid Angel and Grip Inc. in New York. In addition, the band reached a contract with Metal Blade Records , about which the album Deathshead Extermination was released in 1996 . In the middle of the year a two-month tour through the USA followed together with Pro-Pain and Voivod . Before the tour, drummer Fred Waring left the band and was replaced by Roy Mayorga . After a few appearances, this was again replaced by Scott Bates. Mayorga would later join Soulfly among others . This was followed by appearances in Europe together with Spudmonsters and Kickback . This was followed by further appearances in the USA together with Fu Manchu . In 1997 the recordings for the third album The Hollowing followed. Various drummers were involved in the recordings: In addition to the well-known Roy Mayorga, Chris Hamilton, Fred Waring III and Jason Bittner were represented in the recordings, who should remain in the band as a permanent drummer. Other guest musicians on the album included Sammy Pierre Duet ( Acid Bath ) and Norman Westberg ( Swans ). After the album was released, the band split from Metal Blade Records. The band could then be heard with the song Captain Howdy on the soundtrack to Dee Snider's film Dee Snider's Strangeland . In addition, the band recorded a demo produced by Keith Falgout , which included six songs. In 1999, Jwyanza Kaloji Hobson joined the band as the second guitarist, while Tony Costanza ( Machine Head ) played drums. Several concerts followed in this line-up before Christopher J. Olivas joined the band as the new drummer, while Costanza Crowbar joined. In 2002 the band renamed themselves Skullsick Nation, after which the band worked on their next album. In the meantime Roy Mayorga had returned to the band. In December the group was renamed back to Crisis, before Marshall Kilpatric ( Today Is the Day ) joined the band as the new drummer in January 2003 , but Josh Florian should replace him in April. After the band signed a contract with The End Records , the group went to Desert Moon Studios in Anaheim , California with producer Billy Anderson to record the album Like Sheep Led to Slaughter . In April 2003 the band held a few gigs in New York before performing with Soulfly and Ill Niño in the summer . In September, performances with Otep and Kittie followed. However, drummer Florian could not take part in these performances because he suffered a ruptured appendix . Tino LoSicco joined the band for the performances. The Australian Ryan Bell joined the cast in January 2005 . Gigs with 3 Inches of Blood were planned for February, but the band could not take part because bassist Chuan Wang's wife was about to have her child at that time. Drummer Bell left the band after just three rehearsals. A short time later, Bell was to be arrested for armed robbery in Pennsylvania . Justin Arman ( Society 1 ) joined as the new drummer in June with MOD and Jacknife . However, the tour had to be canceled for financial reasons. In September bassist Chuan Wang left the band to devote himself to his family. In 2006 the band announced that the project would be put on hold for an indefinite period.

style

According to Allmusic's Eduardo Rivadavia , the band fills the gap between Faith No More , Killing Joke and Slayer . The singing of Karyn Crisis moves from melodic clear vocals and aggressive, guttural vocals. Martin Popoff described in his book The Collector's Guide of Heavy Metal Volume 3: The Nineties the album Deathshead Extermination as a mixture of Thrash and Death Metal , with Swedish Grindcore . Lyrically, the songs mostly deal with dark topics such as blood, hate, depression and self-hatred. Robert Müller from Metal Hammer compared the vocals of Karyn Crisis on the album with Lydia Lunch and Babes in Toyland . On The Hollowing , the influences from Sludge increased, according to Martin Popoff , so that the band could be compared with more recent works by Voivod. Growling is used as a singing technique in half of the songs . The texts are again negative. The November 1997 edition of Metal Hammer described the album as a mixture of " Industrial , Death Metal and Noise - Avant-garde ". In his review of the album Like Sheep Led to Slaughter, Manuela Liefländer classified the band as hardcore punk . He described the lyrics as apocalyptic , while the singing was experimental, which reminded of Dark Metal in its diversity .

Guitarist Afzaal Nasiruddeen cited New Wave of British Heavy Metal bands as well as post-industrial bands such as Einstürzende Neubauten as influences. Above all, he and the rest of the band tried to implement the avant-garde traits of this band.
