Society 1 is an American nu metal band from Los Angeles , California that was formed in 1998.

history

After finishing his career as a porn producer, singer Matt “The Lord” Zane decided in 1998 to form Society 1 with bassist Justin Reynolds, guitarist Devin Norris and drummer Jame Potter. At Zane's own label, which was called Inzane Records, the debut album Slacker Jesus was released in 1999 . The album was covered by TV stations MTV and VH1 , as well as Billboard , Rolling Stone , Spin , Revolver and Kerrang magazines . After the release followed appearances together with Pro-Pain and Pissing Razors . Sin Quirin joined the line-up as keyboard player, who switched to electric guitar after Norris left the band. In addition, Aleister now played bass while Dagon took over the drums. The second studio album followed via Earache Records with Exit Through the Fear . Another drummer on the album was Edsel Dope from Dope . The song Nothing also received a music video that was broadcast several times in the program Uranium on Fuse TV . Zane had meanwhile acquired a pseudonym with "Lord Nexus" . The release was followed by concerts, with Zane occasionally shooting backstage porn with groupies . From October to December 2002 they went on a tour through North America , together with Dope, Primer 55 and Skinlab . Drummer Dagon dropped out due to an ankle injury, which is why Preston Nash from Primer 55 helped out. After Dagon recovered, she performed in the US in April 2003 with Pissing Razors and 40 Grit . In August and November further concerts followed together with Zug Izland and Twizted. In the latter appearances Dagon could not participate again, which is why Adrian Ost from Powerman 5000 occupied the drummer position for this. In March 2004, Zane sang three songs at a concert in Los Angeles while hanging from six meat hooks 30 feet above the stage. This was based on the music video for Nothing . Jay Gordon was also present as a guest singer. Before the show, bassist Aleister had left the band and was replaced by Dirt. After this performance the band went to Europe to hold concerts with Godhead . Then the band set out to record their third album. Meanwhile, the third music video, Hate , was released and aired in Uranium and Headbangers Ball on MTV 2. In early 2005, the DVD Fearing the Exist followed , which included live performances from 2003 in the US and Europe. The DVD also contained the concert where Zane sang in mid-air. In March of the same year, the next studio album followed with The Sound That Ends Creation . In addition to Zane and the guitarist Quirin, the band consisted of the bassist Dirt and the drummer Preston Nash. In January 2005, however, Berzerk Kirk, brother of Tripp Eisen , came to the band as a drummer. The first 4,000 copies of the album included, as bonuses, The Creation of Sound DVD and Zane's book of poems Release and Demise . The sound carrier was recorded under the direction of Wade Norton ( Static-X ) at NRG Studios . In February the band went on a tour of North America with Bile and Pitbull Daycare . From April to June they went on a European tour with Paradise Lost . Both groups also played together with Orphaned Land in Munich . In June a tour through North America began with Brand New Sin and Scum of the Earth . In 2005 the band also performed at the Download Festival . In 2006 guitarist Quirin joined Revolting Cocks . In March 2006 the band signed a contract with Crash Music, Inc. , which released the album The Years of Spiritual Dissent that same year . In May guitarist Atron (including Prong ) joined the band as a new member, before Mike Greenfield joined the band as a replacement in April 2009. However, Greenfield also left the band in early June. A Journey from Exile was released in 2011 , with Sin Quirin having returned to the band as a guitarist. In January 2017 the entry of Maxxxwell Carlisle as the new guitarist was announced.

style

According to laut.de , the band on Slacker Jesus plays a mixture of Nu- and Industrial-Metal and described the music as a mixture of Marilyn Manson and Korn . In her review of Exit Through Fear , Melanie Aschenbrenner from Metal Hammer stated that the band was somewhere between Nine Inch Nails , White Zombie and Marilyn Manson. Songs like Everyone Dies and Hate would be reminiscent of Ministry and Slipknot . On The Sound That Ends Creation , Society 1 is comparable to White Zombie, Marilyn Manson, Minstry and Fear Factory, according to Elmar Salmutter from Metal Hammer . In addition, minor influences from Gothic and Alternative Rock would also be included .
