Maxxxwell Carlisle (* 1983 ) is an American guitarist and bodybuilder. According to his own information, he does not have a pseudonym, but his actual birth name.

Career

music

Carlisle grew up in Woodinville , a small town in King County ( Washington state ) that is part of the Seattle metropolitan area . His father played the guitar himself, albeit more folk , and his parents encouraged him to learn an instrument at the age of 8. His parents chose the violin for him . He started playing the guitar at the age of 14. The starting point for his interest was a key scene in the film Crossroads that he saw as a child. It shows Steve Vai as a shredder in a guitar duel . As influences on his game he mentions u. a. Chris Impellitteri , Michael Angelo Batio , Tony MacAlpine , Luca Turilli , Paul Gilbert and Yngwie Malmsteen .

He founded his first group "Graceful Chaos" as a teenager during school days. Although grunge was popular at the time , the band moved into hard rock and classic metal . In 2007, Carlisle moved to Los Angeles . A year later he released his solo debut Ramming Speed (2008), which was followed two years later by the instrumental album Speed Force . This was followed by an episode as a tour musician for Neil Turbin, with which Anthrax recorded their first demo .

In 2013 Carlisle became guitarist of the power metal band Hellion , with whom he released an album and an EP in 2014. In addition, he continued to be active as a solo artist and also launched his single Visions of Speed and Thunder in 2014 , which was followed a year later by the compilation album of the same name on the German label Killer Metal Records .

In January 2017, his entry into the nu-metal band Society 1 was announced. He himself described this as a good step towards realizing himself as a musician who wanted to continue to be active with Hellion.

In addition, Carlisle is also active as a guest musician for other artists, such as in 2009 for Michael Angelo Batio on his album Hands Without Shadows Part 2 - Voices or 2016 as lead guitarist Chris Violence, Via Bandcamp album The Raven: a Thrash Metal Opera published .

Bodybuilding

Carlisle started bodybuilding in the late 1990s while still in school . A few years later, a gym friend motivated him to take part in a bodybuilder competition. By the end of 2014 he took part in over 25 competitions, including twice the US championships.

According to his own statement, building muscle has just as little influence on his guitar playing as lifting heavy weights. He just makes sure that his hands are not subjected to any stress - as in boxing.

journalism

Maxxxwell Carlisle hosted a weekly radio show on Metal Express Radio in September 2015 . In addition, he has been publishing album reviews as a regular author for the US music medium since November 2015.

Trivia

In an interview with Guitar World , Carlisle reported that he takes what he does musically very seriously - even if that is not to be suspected at first glance with a bodybuilder with a Mohawk. In return, however, he does not take himself too seriously and can laugh at himself. As an example, he cited a picture on which he was holding up a sign saying “ DragonForce Sucks!” ( German  meaning “ DragonForce stinks ) while Herman Li was apparently choking him.
